Tips for Preventing Water Damage in Your Home

11/16/2020 (Permalink)

While water damage cannot be completely avoided in homes, there are a few actions you can take to prevent some of the more common ways that water damage can occur in your home.

Watch for water accumulation

When excess water accumulates in your Phoenix home, it may cause serious damage if left unattended.  One typical culprit is roof gutters and downspouts. SERVPRO of East Phoenix recommends that you clean your roof gutters and downspouts often. You should do this, especially in the spring and summer months, when the amount of precipitation is naturally higher. This is to minimize the clogs and the resultant side effects.

Keep your drains clear

Avoid drains backing up and causing a flood by watching what you put down the drain. Never pour grease down your sink as it can clog the sink and drainage, impeding water flow and backing up the water, which can result in water damage.

Inspect your faucets

Taps or faucets that are not entirely closed are common causes of excess water in the home, especially a vacant home for long periods when a small drip can become a big issue. Before retiring for the night or leaving the house for work, check to ensure that all of them are completely shut off. If you leave your home for extended periods of time, be sure all faucets are in working order, and no faucets are leaking.

Regularly inspect all plumbing in your home

Ensure that the rest of your plumbing is always intact by regularly having your plumbing checked in your home. Be sure that they have no leaks, perforations, or other issues that may occasion water spillages. Replace old drain hoses from washing machines, inspect supply lines for leaks, and always periodically inspect your water heater for leaks or rust, which can indicate an impending problem. An annual inspection can save a lot of headaches down the road if a small, imperceptible problem becomes an issue that results in flooding and water damage.
